The Spice and Tea Exchange, Blowing Rock, NC, Blue Hawaiian Green Tea, loose tea. Brew hot or cold.
Some very exciting news… I have been invited to collaborate with The Spice and Tea Exchange in Blowing Rock, NC. They are the third highest grossing store of the franchise, which has over 90 stores nationwide since 2008. This location is known for over 85 handcrafted seasonings, which are mixed daily by hand. Blends are tested before introducing them to the consumer. And something special I love: local restaurants create dishes using various spices and teas from the store. Local businesses supporting one another, it’s a beautiful thing.

The Blowing Rock location is nestled in the quaint town in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s a beautiful drive and an adoring town. Boone, NC, Grandfather Mountain, and Tweetsie Railroad are among the things to do and see in the area.

Entering the store, you’re immediately greeted with knowledgeable, foodie enthusiasts. Smell and taste everything! Ask questions and receive flavor suggestions. It’s quite difficult to walk out empty-handed.

The Spice and Tea Exchange carries a wide variety of spices, spice blends, salts, sugars, teas, and more! The “more” includes teapots and diffusers, honey, mortar and pestle sets, salt cellars, and on and on…

Stop for a meal at locally owned restaurants, grab some ice cream, and take a walk through the boutiques and parks.

The Blue Hawaiian Green loose tea, just one of the aromatic teas, is a green tea blend. You’ll bring your water temperature up to 185 for this green tea. A digital thermometer or tea kettle with regulated temperature settings is very handy. Easy-to-understand information is on each label, which I love.

My simple syrup uses vanilla bean seeds, scrapped from a vanilla bean. Don’t throw that vanilla bean away! See my Vanilla Sugar recipe for use!

This recipe is for a single serving. However, this loose tea blend can be steeped twice! See Notes in the recipe card below the instructions.

I have a hot version of the Blue Hawaiian tea coming very soon!

Enjoy!

Ingredients

Pineapple Simple Syrup:

  • 2 tablespoons The Spice and Tea Exchange "Pineapple Sugar", link HERE
  • 2 tablespoons filtered water
  • 1/4 of a vanilla bean, scraped, see Notes

Tea:

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons The Spice and Tea Exchange "Blue Hawaiian Green Tea", link HERE
  • 10 ounces filtered water
  • ice cubes, for serving

Instructions

  • In a small, glass bowl or glass measuring cup, add the Pineapple Sugar, water, and vanilla bean seeds.
  • Microwave for about 15 to 20 seconds or until the mixture just begins to boil. Don’t walk away from the microwave.
  • Stir or swirl and microwave for another 15 to 20 seconds.
  • Microwave for another 15 seconds to completely dissolve the sugar if necessary. Cover and refrigerate the simple syrup.
  • Bring the 8 ounces of water to 185 degrees F. A digital thermometer is helpful for checking for accurate temperature. An electric tea kettle can work well, also.
  • Add the tea leaves to a tea ball (or diffuser that can fit into a mug or tea cup) and steep the tea for 3 minutes.
  • Remove the tea leaves and discard. You are left with a beautiful blue-green tea in your glass/mug. Cover and refrigerate for about 2 hours or overnight, until the tea has chilled.
  • Add the desired amount of simple syrup to the tea. The simple syrup recipe can be easily doubled. Serve over ice.

Notes

Keep the vanilla bean! See my recipe for Vanilla Sugar.
A wonderful feature of this specific tea is that it can be steeped twice, which is really great when making larger amounts. For example, you need 4 tablespoons of loose tea per 32 ounces of water. But, since the tea can be steeped again, you may use 2 tablespoons per 16 ounces of water and resteep the 2 tablespoons again to make 32 ounces total. As for the simple syrup, you would need to quadruple the recipe.
Nutrition chart is a guesstimate only. It is for the Simple Syrup only. You can find the nutrition chart for the Pineapple Sugar on The Spice and Tea Exchange website.
