Tzatziki Sauce

If you love Greek food, you probably love the Tzatziki Sauce that is commonly served alongside gyros, Greek fries, etc. Some recipes for the sauce use sour cream and/or mayonnaise. Other recipes use Greek yogurt, which is how I make my homemade Tzatziki Sauce. The flavors of cucumbers and fresh dill make this sauce crazy-good! The pop of red wine vinegar and lemon juice brings the flavors together that’s a must-try with my Greek Chicken Gyros.

Tzatziki Sauce
This homemade version of the traditional accompaniment to Greek Gyros is fresh-tasting with Greek yogurt and fresh dill.
Equipment
- Colander
- Grater
Ingredients
- 2 cucumbers, mostly peeled and seeds removed discarded
- 1 1/2 cups plain Greek yogurt
- 2-3 tablespoons lemon juice, to taste
- 1/2 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, see Notes
- 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 3 teaspoons fresh dill, chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, peeled, smashed, and minced, or grated on a zester
- 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar
Instructions
- Grate the cucumbers into a colander and set over a medium bowl. Allow the moisture from the cucumbers to drain off.
- Squeeze the cucumbers in layers of paper towels or clean dish towels to remove excess moisture.
- Add the remaining ingredients and stir well to combine.
- Let the Tzatziki Sauce sit at room temperature for 10 minutes for the flavors to meld together.
- Stir again and taste for seasoning. Adjust to your preference.
Notes
I love the oils from Abingdon Olive Oil Company. I use my Lemon-infused oil from this company, but any excellent-quality oil will work.
