DIY Taco Seasoning (Salt-free)

Prep Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 15 minutes | Makes: 1/2 cup (55g)
“Do-It-Yourself” Taco Seasoning allows you to choose what goes into your spice blend – no starches/fillers, or an overload of salt that could potentially ruin your dish. You are able to control the salt content for your taco dish, and who wouldn’t love that?

Try to purchase fresh spices to create a longer shelf life for your seasoning blend. There are specialty spice stores (such as The Spice and Tea Exchange) that sell very good quality, fresh spices that would be ideal for this Taco Seasoning. Yes, they’re a little pricier sometimes, but the freshness and quality beats your typical grocery store spice aisle.

If you’re used to picking up a packet of taco seasoning from the store for convenience, try this homemade version and you just may never go back! A 1-ounce taco seasoning pouch is generally 2 tablespoons. Just measure out from your container and go from there. Maybe you’d like to add more? Go ahead. You don’t have to waste a store-bought packet if you want to adjust your desired amount of seasoning.

If you do like the thickening agents that come in the prepackaged/store-bought packets, you can add a small amount of cornstarch.

If you choose to add salt to your seasoning, you have lots of options. The variety of flavored salts have come a long, long way since I was young. I can only recall Morton’s table salt and Lawry’s Seasoned Salt. Now, you can buy infused salts of sweet or savory aromas and flavors. In this recipe, a smoky salt, high-quality seasoned salt, or even kosher salt would do well. If you love hot and spicy foods, a pepper-infused salt would be delicious. Go ahead, make it personal.

I strongly suggest a glass container to store your seasoning because plastics are porous and will absorb the aromas, making it difficult to remove should you not reuse that container again for another batch of Taco Seasoning.

Dividing up a large batch of this Taco Seasoning into smaller, pretty jars makes great gifts!

This recipe easily doubles.

Enjoy!
