You don’t have to be a tea connoisseur to have heard of this hot tea or be a barista to make it at home. London Fog tea is made with earl grey tea bags (which are generally easy to find), dairy, and sweetener. You can change up the dairy and syrup to make it lower carb, see Notes. I add a sprinkling of ground cinnamon over the top to finish it off. Yumm.

When my husband and I started trying a lower carb diet, I had to drop my regular coffee creamer and broaden my horizons in morning drinks. Thus, I discovered the London Fog. After trying a few brands of earl grey tea, I found that Teavana Earl Grey Crème tea bags are my favorite, probably because that’s what Starbucks uses. There are hints of lavender and vanilla. The tea bags themselves smell divine. Twinings makes an earl grey tea that’s nice, too. When it comes to the dairy, I like half and half. It’s low-carb and froths nicely. Speaking of froth, I purchased a battery-operated, hand-held frother on Amazon. Mine was quite affordable. I’ve had it for about a year and think it does a really good job. It makes restaurant-style drinks right at home.

This tea comes together in about 6 or 7 minutes. If you can take care of heating and frothing your dairy while the tea is steeping for 5 minutes, you’ll be sipping and enjoying your hot London Fog in no time.

Adagio Tea sells the IngenuiTEA teapots on their website. It’s a very handy one-serving, microwavable teapot. You can heat your water, steep your tea, then by placing the teapot on the rim of your mug, it causes a valve to release your brewed tea into your mug. This teapot works great with loose-leaf tea, too. The mesh bottom keeps the leaves in the teapot and the brewed tea to flow into your mug. Pretty handy.

Ingredients

  • 10 ounces water
  • 2 Teavana Earl Grey Creme tea bags
  • 1/2 cup half and half
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla syrup, more or less depending on tastes
  • ground cinnamon, for sprinkling

Instructions

  • Bring the water to a rolling boil. You can do this in a tea kettle on the stove top or an electric kettle, or in a microwave. I use Adagio Tea’s IngenuiTEA teapot. See Notes on this amazing product.
  • Place the water in your mug and add the 2 tea bags and allow to steep for a full 5 minutes. Remove and discard tea bags.
  • Pour the half and half into a 2-cup glass measuring cup and heat in microwave for 1 minute. Alternatively, you can heat on the stovetop.
  • Froth the half and half if you have a frother. It’s okay if you don’t have one, heat your half and half anyway. (Rinse the frother so that your dairy doesn’t stick to it.)
  • Add the frothed milk and as much or as little vanilla syrup as you’d like. Gently stir and taste to see if you’d like to add more syrup.
  • Sprinkle with cinnamon and ENJOY!

Notes

I LOVE Teavana’s Earl Grey Crème. Any earl grey tea bags will work here, but this brand is extra yummy to me!
I use sugar-free vanilla syrup at times I’m watching calories and carbs. Tastes delicious, too.
You could use 1 tea bag, but I like the strength of 2.
Using a 2-cup measuring cup prevents froth from spilling over. (Trust me. You need something bigger than a 1-cup).
I like the richness of half and half. It makes good foam, too. Skim milk makes excellent foam, also, but lacks in flavor. Almond milk lacks the protein that produces the lovely foam. Work with what you enjoy and can consume. Some people have allergies or are on low-carb diets that restrict the type of dairy or non-dairy products they can drink. I would still suggest the sprinkling of cinnamon no matter with or without foam.
I’ve also learned that Adagio Tea sells their own Earl Grey Moonlight tea that has flavors of vanilla and cream. It is delicious also.
